City of Kuopio has decided to use green electricity
City of Kuopio has signed an agreement with Väre Ltd for the purchase of green electricity. From now on all the electricity used by the city of Kuopio is produced by renewable energy sources. This is a significant decision from the point of view of environmental responsibility, because Kuopio´s total electricity consumption is 55,000 megawatt-hours in a year.
Decision to use only green electricity is part of the Kuopio´s climate policy programme 2020-2030. The goal of this programme is to create a carbon-neutral Kuopio by the year 2030. By using green electricity city of Kuopio will reduce carbon dioxide emissions 13,7 million kilograms.
City of Kuopio has taken a significant step towards its carbon-neutrality goal by using only electricity that is produced by renewable energy sources. The agreement made with Väre Ltd is very significant on a national scale, for Kuopio’s total electricity consumption is 55,000 megawatt-hours in a year. By using green electricity city of Kuopio will reduce 13,7 million kilograms CO2 emissions. The majority (80%) of electricity is consumed in city premises.
Our goal is sustainable development in construction, and a long-term use of buildings. Buildings should be energy efficient throughout their lifecycle, and therefore a decision to use green electricity supports these goals very well. In the beginning of 2019, we decided to use district heating produced by wood energy in downtown area premises. That way we re-duced about 10 million kilograms CO2 emissions. Switching to green electricity is a continu-ation to that development, and reliable, and an easy solution for the city of Kuopio to reduce emissions caused by the construction, tells Mr. Hannu Kosunen from the City of Kuopio Facility Management.
Same amount of emissions is equivalent to bake 11 million fish pies
In Finland, guarantees of origin of green electricity is regulated by the law, and controlled by the authorities. In addition to its reliability, green electricity is certified by its origin, and it is easy to count how much you are reducing your greenhouse gas emissions.
Specialists at Väre have counted reference base for 13,7 million CO2 kilograms, and in Kuopio it means that it would be enough to bake 11 million fish pies in a regular electricity oven.
We will achieve a significant reduction in emissions by switching to green electricity, and it is difficult to think another way, which would be as fast and cost-effective as this decision to use only green electricity. Green electricity is also an economical choice, summarises Mr. Kosunen.
Picture Väre Ltd. / -13,7 million CO2 kilograms is equivalent to bake 11 million fish pies in a regular electricity oven or 2205 times around the globe by car.
