Introducing the Niittylahti area and the Ukko Loden pine for September

In September, it might be worth a while to visit the Niittylahti area and admire the beautiful autumn leaf color. The Niittylahti area is one of the most important outdoor and recreational areas in Kuopio and is mostly owned by the city of Kuopio. You can get to know the versatile nature of the area, for example, on an 8 km long nature trail. The trail is marked with green route markers. You can also enjoy the views of Tonkkurinmäki on a separate 2,5 km long trail.

The Niittylahti area is also a home for two nature conservation areas: The ridge of Tokkurinmäki and the rock area of Mustajärvi. You can freely visit and use the shelters at Mustamäki and Suuri-Petäinen. Along the nature trail there is also an observation tower where you can admire the great views of lake Kallavesi. In addition, a snow mobile route runs through the area.

The Niittylahti area is also popular for picking berries and mushroom. You can also purchase a permit for hunting small game in the city-owned area.

The treetop of the Ukko Loden pine, named after a pine that grew in Harjula, has been planted on the side of the parking lot at Niittylahti. The pine is photographed on the front page.

The Ukko Loden pine was preserved as a natural monument in 1974. It is estimated to be about 400 years old. Nevertheless, the pine was damaged in 1987, which led to the tree starting to rot. As a result, the tree became dangerous and had to be cut down from the bus stop in Harjula for safety reasons.
