During this autumn and coming winter residents of Finland are encouraged to save energy because of the situation in the world. Russian acts of war in Ukraine have leaded to problems with energy`s price and availability in Finland and whole Europe. In winter season electricity consumption and heating prices are exceptional high. Everyone should be prepared for possible power cuts. Together we can ensure energy for us all.

City of Kuopio is a part of Finnish nation-wide Down a degree campaign. City of Kuopio gives tips for energy saving in own communication channels and arrange energy saving events for the residents.

Nation-wide Down a degree campaign

Down a degree is a nation-wide energy saving campaign. It started on 10.10.2022 and encourages all Finns to save energy.  

It is important to save energy especially during peak hours at 8–10 am and at 4-6 pm.

Short-term goal of the campaign to get over 95 % of Finnish households to save energy and cut down on their consumption by 5 % during peak hours.
Long-term goal to permanently lower energy consumption and reduce electricity consumption peaks.

Goals of the campaign:

  • All Finns make concrete and effective actions for energy saving.
  • Balancing out the electricity use and shifting use away from times of peak demand - on weekdays at 8–10 am and 4-6 pm.
  • The public sector is expected to play a strong pioneering role in the efficient use of energy.

Down a degree is organized by Motiva, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment of Finland, the Ministry of the Environment, the Prime Minister`s Office and the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra.

Be prepared for possible power shortage

Everyone should be prepared for a possible power cut next winter.
To prepare for a power cut, it is a good idea to have some emergency supplies at home. These supplies include enough food, drink and other daily necessities for several days.
