How to apply for upper secondary school education

You can apply to upper secondary schools through the joint application system for general upper secondary education every spring. You can apply for all programmes included in the joint application system on the Studyinfo website.

What is the joint application system?

The joint application system for general upper secondary schools and vocational institutions is a national procedure that Finnish educational institutions use when selecting new students for general upper secondary schools and vocational institutions. The spring joint application period for programmes starting the following autumn usually takes place in February/ March. The joint application system allows you to use one form to apply for a maximum of five (5) study programmes. You should rank your programme choices in order of preference. The programme ranking is binding and you cannot change it after the end of the application period. However, you can make changes to your application while the application period is still open.

Admission criteria

Upper secondary school students are selected based on their average grade in theoretical subjects on their school certificate. Entrance and aptitude tests may also be used and students may be awarded points for hobbies and other relevant activities. If the school certificate of a foreign student is not comparable with the Finnish equivalent, the student's potential to attend general upper secondary school can be assessed separately. Students applying with foreign certificates must send copies of their certificates to the schools by the end of the application period.
