The Puijo first snow season in numbers

The paid season for Puijo’s first snow track, or rather stored snow track, ended last week. The season was exceptionally long due to the current snow conditions.

The implementation of the track is monitored closely every year. For example, how much snow is pumped into the snow pile at Puijo, how much water is used, and how much of it melts during the year. In March 2025 the measurements showed that the amount of snow was approximately 10,400 m³, and approximately 7,000 m³ of water was needed to spray this amount. The longer warm period in the summer melted a relatively large amount of the snow pile, and according to measurements taken on October there was 6,760 m³ of snow left.

Due to weather conditions, the trail was opened a week later than planned and skiing was possible on the 1.5 km trail starting on 20.11. The asphalt roller ski track, which was built a few years ago, also proves its worth in winter use. Snow melts more slowly and remains cleaner. This means that less snow is needed in the first place and it is easier to keep the track open.

Economically, the first snow track is inexpensive for the city in terms of the amount of exercise achieved and many other exercise destinations. Each year, approximately €45,000–60,000 is spent on maintaining the track, including all expenses. As users of the track pay a small fee for its use, ticket revenues also accumulate to reduce the amount paid by the public. In 2025, approximately €44,000 was collected in user fees, covering about 80% of the €55,000 in costs. By comparison, the average cost/revenue ratio for all sports facilities is exactly the opposite, with users paying around 20% of the costs incurred.

Thank you to everyone who used the trail and those responsible for maintaining it. The trail will be rebuilt next winter.
