Impact of possible power cuts on city services

Community activities are interrupted during possible power cuts, and customers will be safely directed out of the premises. Whenever possible, customers will be informed of power cuts in advance.

• • There will likely be little light in the school premises > if necessary, lessons can be held outdoors or in some other safe space.
  • Air conditioning will stop working, and ventilation should be done by opening windows.
  • On cold winter days, we ask that guardians make sure that pupils have enough warm clothing with them for both indoor and outdoor activities.
  • Battery-powered lamps will be purchased for schools for shared use, but it can be useful for pupils to have their own torches, head lamps or phone lights when they move about or go to the toilet.
  • During longer power cuts, the use of water and drains/toilets may need to be restricted if there is no water or the waste water pumping station is not working.
  • Especially during longer power cuts, water pressure may also decrease, thus weakening water supply. Pupils can bring hand wipes for cleaning their hands if they wish.
  • Catering will differ from normal days as food cannot be heated. Schedules for eating times may change. Pupils can bring their own snacks if they wish. It is not possible to store or heat food during the school day.
  • During a power cut, it is likely that phones or the internet will only work for a while, which will make communication between the school and the home more difficult. It is a good idea to limit unnecessary messages and calls. In case of longer power cuts, the city’s official bulletins are broadcast by radio. However, in an emergency, the school will be able to call the emergency services.
  • In lessons, electronic learning materials and devices can only be used for a limited time. We recommend that you keep all devices fully charged.
  • It is a good idea to reserve backup power sources for homes.
  • If there is no outdoor lighting, it is important to use reflectors and take special care when travelling to school or moving about outdoors.

Kuopio Music Centre takes care of the safety of customers in case of a power cut and informs customers when power cuts occur.
