Welcome to Kuopio!


There are over 1,600 foreign nationals living in Kuopio, which is around 1.7 % of the population (2011). The foreign population consists of 90 different nationalities. The largest proportion in Kuopio are Russian nationals (around 380 people). The next largest group consists of nationals of Myanmar, Sudan, Thailand, Iraq and Turkey.

Immigrants come to Kuopio for different reasons. There are refugees, return immigrants, people arriving because of family ties, employees, students and those having got married coming here. For the city of Kuopio, multiculturalism is a source of strength that we want to develop. Different operators of the city work in cooperation to help return immigrants settle in.

The Integration Programme for Immigrants of Kuopio city is currently being updated. Once completed, the programme can be accessed from these pages.

Kuopio has also compiled an Internationality Programme, which is a joint cooperation programme for Kuopio city and its regional partners. The objective of the programme is to strengthen the competitiveness of Kuopio by developing the international business operations environment and promoting export and exchange. Another central theme is improving the conditions for international services as well as promoting general internationalism.
