Pölhö
Located near the city centre along Saaristokatu, Pölhö Island is a popular and easily accessible destination for small excursions for the whole family. There is a hiking trail around the island, through which you can admire the lake scenery that opens in different directions from the rocky shores. The route is about one kilometre long and there are stairs and other wooden structures along it to make it easier to get around. The hiking trail starts from the parking lot at Saaristokatu 21. There is also a bus stop on Saaristokatu next to the island, where lines 5 and 6 stop.
Pölhö has a barbecue shelter and two campfire sites. The barbecue shelter can be reached via a hiking trail around the island and an easy dirt road about a hundred meters from the parking lot along Saaristokatu. The length of the dirt road is about 250 meters. At the beginning of the dirt road there is an anti-car barrier, which can be circumvented by wheelchair. If necessary, the key to the boom can be requested from the customer service of the council house. In the area of the barbecue shelter there is a firewood storage, an accessible toilet, a paddle dock, a pier and buoy places. The island’s other two campfire sites are along the hiking trail around the island, one at the southern tip and the other in the central part of the island.
The island of Pölhö consists mainly of bright, pine-dominated mixed forests. There are some elevation differences on the island, and at higher points in the terrain you can find species of fresh heath forest. In small hollows, the growth is already slightly more lush. There are also fine rock pine trees and rocky shores on the island. The highest cliffs along the trails are on the western and northern shores of the island. Blueberries are very abundant in places, which makes Pölhö a good place to collect blueberries. Along the main path, there are fine decaying logs of decaying trees where dwarfs grow. You can also meet many different birds on and around the island, from waterfowl to small insectivores.
